About Expat Naturalist

Expat Naturalist began with a simple idea: the world becomes more interesting the moment you start paying attention to it.

The shop is curated by an American naturalist who now lives along the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in one of the most fascinating and overlooked ecosystems in the tropics—the tropical dry forest. Life here moves with the seasons: dusty trails and brilliant sun for much of the year, then sudden bursts of rain that wake the forest back to life. Iguanas cross the road, birds fill the trees at dawn, and the ocean is never far away.

Living in a new country sharpened something important: curiosity.

As an expat, traveler, and field naturalist, you start to notice how much of the world reveals itself when you slow down and observe. A walk becomes a small expedition. A beach becomes a place to watch fish, crabs, and shorebirds. A simple notebook becomes a place to capture questions, sketches, and discoveries.

Expat Naturalist grew out of that mindset.

This shop brings together tools, gear, and small delights that help people explore the living world wherever they are—whether that’s a rainforest trail, a tidepool, a neighborhood park, or a backyard garden. You’ll find field science tools, natural science inspired notebooks, snorkeling gear, sun hats, and practical items that make outdoor exploration easier and more enjoyable.

Everything in the store is chosen with a naturalist’s eye: useful, durable, curiosity-sparking, and ready for real adventures.

Expat Naturalist is for travelers discovering new ecosystems, for expats learning the landscapes of their adopted homes, for students and homeschool families studying nature firsthand, and for anyone who still feels that small thrill when they notice something alive that they’ve never seen before.

Because the truth is, you don’t have to travel far to be an explorer.

You just have to start looking.
